Granting and revoking access

Explain it simply with: ChatGPT Claude Perplexity Gemini Grok

Access is one thing, wherever it came from. A purchase, a manual grant and being placed in a community all write the same access record, so a member never ends up with two competing kinds of access to the same product.

Three main ways in

  • Someone buys. A completed payment automatically grants the product to the buyer’s email address.
  • You grant it. Open the product, click the Customers tab, enter an email address and optionally a name, then click Grant access.
  • Someone gets a community. Everything placed in a community is granted along with it, so one community grant can hand over a dozen products at once. See Running a community.

New people get an invitation

If the email address you’re granting access to doesn’t belong to anyone yet, a contact is created and an invitation goes out by email with a link to set a password. That link is valid for seven days. The access itself exists immediately; the invitation is only for claiming the login. Until the person sets a password, their row is marked as a pending invitation.

The Customers tab shows everyone

Direct grants have a Revoke access button. Rows labelled with a community name are read-only here, because that access comes from the community. You remove those people from the community’s own member list.

Manual grants are permanent on purpose

Access granted manually is never revoked automatically. If that person later cancels a subscription covering the same product, your gifted access survives.

Access from a purchase follows the payment

When a subscription ends with the payment provider, access to what it covered is revoked. A failed payment doesn’t revoke access straight away, unless you set it to in the Sales section, under the subscription and cancellation settings.

There are a few more doors

A sign-up step in a funnel can grant a free lead magnet, an automation can grant an offer, and your API integrations and connected apps can grant a product by email address. They all write the same record, so revoking access later works exactly the same way.
