Segments that update themselves
A segment is a saved rule, not a saved list. Membership is worked out afresh every time it’s used, so a contact moves into and out of a segment automatically as their tags, activity or purchases change. You never have to recalculate anything by hand.
Where to find them
Open Marketing → Email campaigns and click Segments in the page header. You can also get there from the Recipients tab in any campaign, via Manage segments.
Building a segment
Click New segment, give it a name, then choose whether a contact must match All conditions or Any condition. Add conditions with the Add condition button, up to ten. As you build, a live counter below the rules shows how many contacts match right now, before you save anything.
Available conditions
- Marketing status: is or is not one of Subscribed, Unsubscribed, Unconfirmed, Bounced, Marked as spam.
- Tag: is or is not attached to the contact.
- List: does or does not contain the contact.
- Date added: within the last N days, or more than N days ago.
- Last activity: within the last N days, or silent for more than N days.
- Email activity: opened, clicked, opened nothing or clicked nothing in the last N days.
- Email delivered or not delivered in the last N days.
- Product: owned or not owned by the contact.
- Offer: owned or not owned by the contact.
- Coupon: used or not used by the contact.
- Purchase: made or not made in the last N days.
- Total revenue: at least, or less than, a given amount.
- Form submission: submitted or did not submit a specific form, or any form.
- Page visit: has visited or has never visited one of your pages.
- Email sequence: is active in a given sequence, has completed it, or is not in it.
Day windows accept values from 1 to 3650.
Where segments come in handy
Choose a segment as the recipients of a campaign on the Recipients tab of any email. See Sending your first campaign. Segments are also available in automations as the condition “Is in saved segment”. See Automations and sequences.
Managing segments
The list shows each segment with a summary of its rules, the current number of matching contacts and the date it was last changed. The More menu offers Edit, Duplicate and Delete. Deleting a segment never deletes contacts: only that recipient source disappears from the emails that pointed to it.
