Website analytics

Explain it simply with: ChatGPT Claude Perplexity Gemini Grok

Website analytics covers your published public pages: who visited, where they came from and how far they got.

Where to find it

Open Analytics → Website analytics.

The numbers

The Live badge at the top counts unique visitors from the last five minutes. It only appears for the 7, 30 and 90-day ranges, because a historical window has no live figure.

Below it are four tiles:

  • Page views: the total number of page views in the window.
  • Unique visitors, with the share of returning visitors underneath.
  • Average time on page, with the average scroll depth underneath.
  • Bounce rate, with the total number of clicks underneath.

A bounce here means an engagement bounce: a visit shorter than 10 seconds with not a single click.

The panels

Traffic plots page views per day across the whole window.

Traffic sources groups visits into Direct, Search engines, Social media and Referrals, worked out from the referring site and the UTM tags on the landing URL.

Devices and Top countries break the same visits down in other ways.

Engagement gathers average time, average scroll, returning share and clicks in a single list.

Top pages is a table of your most viewed pages, with the columns Page, Type, Views, Visitors and Average time.

Click maps shows small previews of your five most recently published pages. See Click heatmaps.

How tracking works

Tracking is built in and runs first-party, as part of your own website. There is no external analytics service, no third-party script and no data flowing out to another company.

A small script runs on your published pages. It records a page view on load and, when the visitor leaves, sends the time on page, scroll depth and number of clicks. It also sends a refresh every 30 seconds, so long reading sessions aren’t lost.

To count unique visitors, it stores a random identifier in a first-party cookie that lasts one year. The identifier is hashed before it is saved, so the raw value never ends up in your data. No names, email addresses or IP addresses are recorded.

Device, browser, operating system, traffic source and country are worked out on the server from the request itself, without any external service.

Only published pages are tracked. Previews and editor views are not.

Details for a single page

From the page list, open the analytics for a specific page to see the same numbers limited to that page, plus a breakdown by browser and referrer and a direct link to its heatmap.
