Coupons and discounts

Coupons are discount codes that buyers enter at checkout. They work on one-off purchases.

Where to find it

Open Sales → Coupons.

Creating a code

Click New coupon and fill in:

  • Code: letters, numbers, hyphens and underscores, up to 40 characters. It’s saved in capitals, so summer20 becomes SUMMER20. Each code must be unique in your dashboard.
  • Discount type: Percentage (1 to 100) or Fixed amount. A fixed-amount discount also needs a currency.
  • Applies to: All products or one specific product.
  • Maximum uses: optional. Leave it empty for no limit.
  • Expires: optional. The date must be in the future, and the code works until the end of that day.
  • Active: on by default.

The coupon list

Each row shows the code, the discount along with the product it applies to, the number of uses against the limit, the expiry date and the status, which you can click to switch the code on or off instantly. The row menu also offers Edit, Activate or Deactivate, and Delete.

Deleting a code stops everyone from using it. Earlier orders keep the discount they were given.

How buyers use them

A Have a code? link appears on your checkout page, but only when you have at least one active code. The buyer opens it, enters the code and clicks Apply. The total updates straight away, or a short message explains why the code wasn’t accepted.

Rules

A code is rejected when it’s inactive, has expired, has reached its usage limit, applies to a different product, or its currency doesn’t match the product’s currency. Codes can’t be used on subscriptions, because a discounted recurring price would quietly lower every renewal that follows.

A use only counts once the payment actually completes, so abandoned checkouts never eat into your limit.

Fully discounted orders

A 100% code, or a discount that leaves an amount too small to charge, produces a clean free order. Access is still granted, and no invoice is issued, because no money moved.

These orders are counted in the free orders over time report. See the report catalogue.
