How to accept payments

To accept payments for a course, ebook, consultation or any other product in heyhey, connect your own payment provider account. The money is settled into your account with the provider, and heyhey matches the payment to the order and handles the buyer’s access to the product.

Where to connect a provider

Open Sales → Payments in your heyhey dashboard. heyhey works with two providers, Stripe and PayPal. Choose the one you already have an account with or plan to open one with. You don’t have to connect both.

The Payment providers category has full guides, with field names, testing and fixes for common errors:

Provider What you need to connect Guide
Stripe A restricted API key with the right permissions Connect Stripe step by step
PayPal Your app’s Client ID and Secret Connect PayPal step by step

Provider vs payment method

A provider is the company that handles the transaction and settles it into your account. A payment method is the way the customer chooses to pay:

  • Stripe: cards (Visa, Mastercard), Apple Pay and Google Pay.
  • PayPal: the buyer pays through PayPal.

You don’t connect Apple Pay or Google Pay separately: they come through your Stripe account. Whether a method is available depends on the provider, the services activated on your account, the currency and your checkout settings. Apple Pay and Google Pay also only appear on devices and browsers that support them. Switching a toggle on in heyhey doesn’t replace activating the service with your provider.

If you connect both Stripe and PayPal, check the settings on each provider’s card. After any change to your setup, test the specific payment method yourself as a buyer.

Your first connection

  1. Set up your merchant account and complete the verification steps your provider requires. Stripe will ask for your business details and a bank account for payouts; requirements depend on your country.
  2. Open the guide for your provider from the table above.
  3. Copy the identifiers and keys it lists into heyhey.
  4. Choose the mode that matches your credentials: Sandbox for testing, or live for real payments.
  5. Save the connection and complete any extra steps from the guide, for example checking that PayPal shows subscriptions as ready.
  6. Go through a full purchase and check the order, the purchase email and access to the product.

Test before you start selling

The provider forms have a Sandbox / test mode option. Use it only with matching test credentials. Turning it on doesn’t turn live keys into test keys.

Before you share your checkout with customers, connect your live credentials, turn Sandbox off and check a purchase in the live environment. A real transaction may be subject to provider fees, even if you refund it afterwards.

A Connected status doesn’t yet mean every product and method has been tested. If you sell a subscription, test the subscription too, not just a one-off purchase.

Payment confirmation and product access

The provider sends heyhey an automatic confirmation of the transaction result, and that’s what gives the order its correct status. The customer landing back on the thank-you page doesn’t replace this confirmation.

If the provider shows the payment but the order in heyhey is still pending, check the notifications section in that provider’s guide. Don’t ask the customer to pay a second time straight away. Have the order number and the transaction ID ready for your support request.

Fees, payouts and refunds

Payout terms and provider fees come from your agreement with the provider, and connecting it to heyhey doesn’t remove those fees. heyhey itself takes 0% commission (see Payment processing fees). Check settlements and your payout schedule in your provider account.

Link every refund to a specific order and transaction. Check whether a refund action is available in the order details in heyhey, or use your provider’s dashboard, then confirm the result in both places. Don’t repeat the same operation while the previous one is still waiting for confirmation.

Changing or disconnecting an account

Disconnecting a provider can stop new payments. It also doesn’t automatically move or cancel subscriptions. Before you remove your keys, check your active subscriptions and have the new connection ready.

If you need help, contact heyhey support. Tell us the provider, the order number and the error message. Keep API keys and secrets in your integration settings and never send them in a message.
